Piloting Nature Positive Farming with smallholder producers in Indonesia

Last year, Nature Positive Farming programme was first piloted in an oil palm production landscape in Indonesia, within the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Programme (SPLP).

Our Nature Positive Farming programme is an early engagement programme for companies and landscape initiatives to support non-certified smallholder farmers protect High Conservation Values and natural ecosystems as part of responsible sourcing commitments. It was developed by the HCV Network in collaboration with Proforest, building on several years of developing smallholder adapted HCV tools within the context of certification. The first field pilot, in 2021, formed part of the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Programme.

As part of the pilot we followed a multi-step engagement and cascade training process. This started with socialization with stakeholders from the two district governments, as well as environmental NGOs, farmer organisations, and SPLP Village Facilitators. This was followed by training village facilitators and community-support representatives from across Siak and Pelalawan villages on introducing locally-adapted Nature Positive Farming modules to smallholder farmers. With this initial capacity, we mentored the trained village facilitator in completing the NPF self-assessment with farmers in one priority village.

In this Story from the Field we reflect on the lessons from the first pilot, activities around the planning and preparation, training and dialogue, and how the pilot is being used to further develop the Village Support Programme.
