“The FIA provides a robust and effective forest monitoring methodology that can be quickly and easily applied and the results readily understood by all stakeholders” Craig Tribolet, Sustainability Operations Manager, APRIL Group
Monitoring forest biodiversity over time in areas allocated for conservation and High Conservation Value (HCV) areas is challenging. The Forest Integrity Assessment Tool was developed as a participatory tool for monitoring forest biodiversity condition. Its strength is that it was designed to simplify forest monitoring. It is not reliant on ecological expertise, yet by providing a relative score of forest condition, it informs managers of whether management and restoration efforts are working. As such, it can be used to monitor species and habitats/ecosystems but is also suited to engaging local communities in the monitoring itself, and for their self assessments. It has been tested and successfully implemented in boreal, temperate and tropical forests in many parts of the world. The HCV RN runs training programs on the FIA tool to conservation personnel, which includes adapting the monitoring checklist to their region and ecosystem.
In February, Olivia and Arie from the HCV RN Secretariat, trained 30 forest protection staff from APRIL Group in the Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia.
APRIL produces 7% of the world’s pulp and is the second largest pulp and paper company in Asia. The company is committed to maintaining High Conservation Values and to no deforestation and aims to have 1 hectare of conservation area for every hectare of production. Over 369,420 ha of Estate lands dedicated to Conservation and Restoration are actively managed by APRIL teams. Using a combination of classroom teaching and field trips at APRIL’s Kerinci Headquarters, participants learnt how to adapt and implement the FIA tool to their context, and integrate it into their existing management and monitoring procedures.
“APRIL have made a USD $100 million commitment to forest conservation and restoration activities in Riau and it is important that our Forest Protection teams have access to suitable tools to manage and monitor these areas. Our existing Operational Procedures play a critical role in understanding long term changes but the information is not easily understood and often beyond the capability of our community partners. The FIA provides a robust and effective forest monitoring methodology that can be quickly and easily applied and the results readily understood by all stakeholders” Craig Tribolet, Sustainability Operations Manager, APRIL Group
